250,000 in Berlin Say No to Transatlantic Trade Agreements

Berlin – Organizers estimate 250,000 attended the massive protest against the proposed trade agreements with North America, including the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with the US, and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada.

More than 30 organizations – including trade unions, civil rights groups, Germany’s opposition Green and Left parties, opponents of globalization, cultural, religious and environmental organizations all supported the protest.

Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now, told the Guardian that the protest showed that the EU did not have a public mandate for the agreement: “Everything that we know about this secretive trade deal shows that it is very little about trade and very much about enshrining a massive corporate power-grab.”

Some of the many points of outrage for the proposed global trade agreements are allowing multinational corporations to sue nations over their existing laws and regulations before special tribunals, potentially eroding existing standards and that all negotiations and text of the trade deals have been kept secret from the public.

“Never before have we seen so many people take to the streets for this issue,” the German trade union confederation DGB, which helped organize the protest, said on Saturday.

“We are here because we do not want to leave the future to markets, but on the contrary, to save democracy,” said Michael Mueller, president of the ecological organization German Friends of Nature.

“What bothers me the most is that I don’t want all our consumer laws to be softened,” Oliver Zloty told Reuters TV. “And I don’t want to have a dictatorship by any companies.”

Without the leaked documents published by WikiLeaks people the world over would most likely know very little, if anything about the contents of the trade deals. Just yesterday WikiLeaks released the final negotiated text for the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) Intellectual Property Rights Chapter.

In its largest disclosure yet relating to the TISA negotiations, WikiLeaks has published 17 secret documents from the ongoing TISA (Trade In Services Agreement) negotiations that cover numerous previously undisclosed areas. While the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) has become well known in recent months in the United States, the TISA is the larger component of the strategic TPP-TISA-TTIP ‘T-treaty trinity’.

It contains drafts and annexes on issues such as air traffic, maritime, professional services, e-commerce, delivery services, transparency, domestic regulation, as well as several documents on the positions of the negotiating parties.

Fifty countries including Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the European Union (representing its 28 member countries) and the United States are engaged in secret TiSA negotiations, which began in 2013. While these nations comprise two-thirds of the global GDP all parts of the strategic ‘T-treaty trinity’ notably exclude the ‘BRICS’ countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

A global corporate coup

The global TPP-TISA-TTIP ‘T-treaty trinity’ trade agreements are the largest-ever international economic treaty that has ever been negotiated and a form of multi-national corporate coup attempt to privatize and regulate all forms of a modern economy.

Julian Assange stated in a recent interview with Democracy Now (below) that “It’s about regulating labor, what labor conditions can be applied, regulating, whether you can favor local industry, regulating the hospital healthcare system, privatization of hospitals.”

The services sectors now account for nearly 80 per cent of the US and EU economies and even in developing countries like Pakistan account for 53 per cent of the economy.

Essentially, every aspect of a modern economy is set forth in the TPP, only five of the 29 chapters are about traditional trade. The others are about regulating future labor practices and what information Internet service providers have to collect and hand over to companies under certain circumstances.

In an unprecedented move the ‘T-treaty trinity’ also establishes the structure to enable only multi-national corporations the legal right and avenues to pursue litigation against nation states and local governments who don’t comply as a means of enforcing the treaty.
