OPEN CALL SOLIDARITY ACT TO ANARCHIST COMRADE XRISTOFOROS KORTESIS
On 12/7, the anarchists Xristoforos Kortesis and Thimios A. attempted to remove some products of meaningless worth from the Leroy Merlin store of Peiraios street, in Athens. Through a complex manipulation on behalf of the OVIT security company and Leroy Merlin, and while they were both held hostages inside the store for 3 hours, an organized attempt took place to involve at the explicit incidence, the employee and a fighting trade unionist, Giannis A. The judicial authorities took advantage of the occasion to payback to X. Kortesis, the many years of consistent and persistent action in the anarchist movement. Keep in mind that the comrade is being held imprisoned since 16/7, followed by upgraded and constructed charges, under the terrorist law for robbery. The same charges are held also for Thimios A. while the employee Giannis A. is being accused for being an accomplice. Pavlos X. that came at the Leroy Merlin store, alongside with 3 more comrades in a solidarity act, is confronted with criminal concealing charges.
The systematic enlargement of the prosecution and the detention of the comrade X. Kortesis is due to his long-lasting political action in the anarchist movement, as well as to his previous conviction, under the accusation of participating in the organization Revolutionary Struggle (E.A.), held by a special political court inside the Koridallos prison. A repression tactic that takes on idiosyncratic features when it comes to fighting comrades, while at the same time law enforcement authorities are exerting all their rigor and legal arsenal on our fighting comrades, to state it exemplarily. At this specific occasion, the detention of X. Kortesis is signalling a very clear and threatening message not only to the dozens of anarchist comrades that have been persecuted, imprisoned or released under restrictions, but also to all those that intend to be present and solidary in the social and class struggles.
Finally, this case is being exploited by the state to criminalize political and comrade relationships and solidarity acts by labelling them as gangs and criminal protecting, while the underlying thinking of the judicial mechanisms is to stigmatize and criminalize the class of the poor. The multinational company Leroy Merlin must assume responsibilities for the case and the detention of our comrade. It should be noted that on August 9th, one of the co-owners of the ADEO global multinational group including Leroy Merlin, Hugues Mulliez, killed two people in his speedboat, while seriously injured a third person riding on a boat, in Porto Heli outside Athens. Greek justice has assumed responsibilities by protecting a rich man and releasing him on bail of 50,000 euros with the obligation of presenting himself at the Greek Embassy in Paris once a month!
Over the past period, the Assembly has organized a series of assemblies and interventions (in public places, in Leroy Merlin stores, at the headquarters of security company OVIT, in Piraeus Courts, at the Athens Law School where the prosecutor Aggeloudi is attending), and has issued corresponding announcements and posters on the case (https://athens.indymedia.org/post/1600196/).
Along with actively highlighting the political spin of this case, the Assembly with the participation of persecuted comrades as well as prisoner comrade X. Kortesis, approaches the whole issue in its totality, by discussing all the implications of the case, such as the judicial procedural part and the financial support of the persecuted.
Comrade, X. Kortesis is imprisoned in Koridallos prisons since 16/7, while on August the appeal against his detention was dismissed. The Assembly has expressed its positions and has taken a total stand against the persecution of comrades, the detention of comrade Kortesis, the setting-up of the prosecution, the cursory prosecution of Kortesis, and the revealing rationale of his detention in a published text, (https://athens.indymedia.org/post/1599468/)while Kortesis himself published a political text this September , where he takes a total stance and expresses his positions regarding the case (https://athens.indymedia.org/post/1599757/).
For the following period, the Assembly is planning to continue its diverse moves against state-prosecuting mechanisms and the Leroy Merlin-OVIT companies responsible for the prosecutions. On Tuesday 22/10 we held a gathering in the Piraeus courts where all the investigators and prosecutors involved in the case are located (https://athens.indymedia.org/post/1600583/).We decided , to organize a demonstration, in Athens on Saturday, November 23.
We address an open call for solidarity and action in every direction, inside and outside Greece. In the forthcoming period, we consider it critical that political initiatives are being taken in other cities in Greece, as well as beyond the borders, initiatives that will highlight the case and its political domains focused on the immediate release of comrade X. Kortesis, while we consider legitimate the corresponding political initiatives of financial support as well.
Assembly of anarchist collectives, comrades and solidarities
Should poverty be a crime, how should we call those who enforce and guard it?
In some department store of a large multinational company, two individuals, due to the difficult economic situation that was imposed to them, attempt to remove certain products without paying. The store’s security guards become aware of their action . When they are up to leave the store, the two individuals are asked to go through a security check and are shown to the interrogation room that every large department store has. In cases like this, the situation is usually resolved by compensating the value of the products taken from the store.
To anyone who has a basic understanding of social reality, the above description is neither a scene from an action film that involves gangs and gangsters, nor a passage from some science fiction novel. It is a snapshot of the raw daily life routine that we, a large part of the society, experience and that has been intensified on every level in the recent years of the economic and social crisis. This sort of pilferage from department stores and super markets consist a condition necessary to the survival of those that are strangled by the garrotte of the shiny world of the “capitalistic bliss”. Due to this economic dead-end that I also experience, I attempted to appropriate 180 euros worth of products (related to my occupation such as sockets and safeties) from the French multinational department stored of Leroy Merlin. However, the outcome of this attempt was not the anticipated one due to certain “peculiar characteristics”, that is to compensate for products and put the issue to a rest. Instead, I was illegally held for three hours, blackmailed and finally end up being imprisoned until trial for one felony and four misdemeanor.
The peculiar characteristics for the development and the ultimate result of this story, both for me and the rest of the comrades involved in the events, are not others but our very own political choices, our political identity and action. Our consistent and uncompromising choice to be an integral part of the anarchist movement, for at least 20 years.
To make a long story short, for almost three hours the security company Ovit, following orders by their employer Leroy Merlin, detained myself and my comrade Thymios A. illegally, threatened and blackmailed us to implicate as an accomplice the employee and union member Giannis A.
Firstly, we were asked to compensate for the products, a fact which is supported by the existence of the receipt provided by the store, to put an end to the incident. Due to the fact that we could not at that moment pay back the owed amount, we informed a comrade about the situation who immediately arrived to the store and he communicated to the security guard that he was there to pay the owed amount. In the meantime, I informed the security team of the store about my previous conviction whilst explaining that the involvement of the police and a possible new arrest would lead to a new imprisonment, as it actually happened later on. They reassured us – “in their man’s word” something that in a patriarchal society counts as valid – that this would never happen and that the situation would come to an end given that such events occur daily .
After quite some time and while we were waiting, the “friendly” environment suddenly vanished with the arrival to the interrogation room of the head security guard, Konstantinos Drivas. After introducing himself, he said that he needed to contact the director of the company. During the time we were being held hostage, Drivas was in direct contact with his employers, walking in and out of the room to talk to them. At some time, he notified us that they were no longer interested in the amount owed and that their priority was to implicate a specific employee of the store, Giannis A., as our accomplice.
What did interfere during all these hours and they lost interest in the owed amount? As they knew that I had unfinished business with the state, they thought that, now, they had a weak link in their hands and that they should not leave this opportunity fly away, therefore they called in an expert. Drivas, being former military officer and trained in interrogation techniques using threats and blackmail compatible to the NATO’s standards – , was the right person to handle the situation, which is why he rushed to the store.
Presenting Giannis as an accomplice, would enable a possible firing , ending once and for all this sort of “gangrene” for the company, as the head of the security characteristically mentioned. At some point, he asked us to sign an official statement that would point him out as our accomplice otherwise calling the police would be inevitable. After signing a document that stated that we removed some products from the store and declared the equivalent amount but without mentioning the employee, Drivas, obviously irritated, ripped it into pieces. At the same time, Giannis was already called and discussed with the manager of the store, who was intensively asking for his resignation. Returning from the meeting where Giannis would not give in to the blackmail of implicating him in the event and therefore his dismissal wasn’t made possible, Drivas announced that he already called the police. Realizing that during these three hours of threatening and blackmail, they were merely lying to us, we stated to them that we were going to leave the premises of the store.
When Drivas became aggressive towards us, we informed the comrades that had arrived and waited outside of the store to provide the money for the products. We did not wait to be delivered as trophies by Leroy and its leaches to the police but we did try to escape from our illegal detention. At that point, Drivas exercised physical violence injuring our comrade Thymios A. Eventually, we managed to free ourselves and leave the store together with the rest of the comrades.
From that moment on, the repressive mechanisms of the police and the judicial authorities, that have other priorities, tokk charge of the situation. My implication in the event that took place in the Leroy Merlin department store triggered an alarm in the Hellenic Police that rushed to find me. The day after I was arrested in downtown Athens. After they beat me in the face and the head and being hooded, I was led to Piraeus General Police Directorate. With the arrival of three security guards and the financial director of the Leroy Merlin department store that testified (falsely) as witnesses against me, I was charged with three misdemeanors. The paradox, here, lies in the fact that while it is derived by their testimonies that we were held hostages for more than three hours, they were not charged with illegal detention.
Immediately after, a police task force charged with the surveillance of the public performed an extremely thorough investigation at my house, confiscating objects that are obviously irrelevant to the events of the previous day but are related to my political identity and activity. The next day, the public prosecutor, Maria Aggeloudi upgrades the charges and expands the number of the defendants by taking advantage of the prevarications and the lies of the (false) witnesses and therefore lays the groundwork for my preventive detention. It constitutes a common practice among the judicial circles to build up their careers by destroying the lives of others. The question that needs answering here is how can we talk about predatory theftwhen there is no sign of violence on our side and the stolen goods remain inside the store.
Two days later, the investigating magistrate, Georgios Pantelidis, during the interrogation process focused on my political activity and past rather than the actual facts of the case I was being prosecuted for, questioning me about the actions of the organization Revolutionary Struggle (E.A.), about the actions of the political collective I participate in, about the anarchist standpoint on violence, whether or not we are being funded by illegal acts, therefore giving my prosecution and preventive detention a political character. Alongside the public prosecutor Kamiliaris, who only asked me about the names of the rest of my comrades – which of course I didn’t provide – spat on a piece of paper the justification of my preventive detention which carried an unprecedented rational, the criminalization of those being economically weak.
...we, with our ideas.....
The conviction that moved the different pillars of authority can be fully explained only in the light of class antagonism. Therefore, in the very reasonable question that may occur to someone - “why were you treated like that?” - the answer lies in our personal and collective view and life stance against the present system of authority.
The reason why Giannis A. is being targeted by Leroy Merlin and Ovit has to do with him being in a worker’s union in the trade sector, his choice to strike as well as him being in solidarity with his coworkers that were targeted by their employer. Since the outbreak of the global crisis on economic, political, and social levels, there is an effort from those in power to dismantle even the façades of the “social contract”. In this manner, they try to take back everything that was gained in the previous decades of struggles. In Greece, the austerity packages voted was an onslaught of antisocial measures against the working class through which the dominant class, part of which are the large multinational companies such as Leroy Merlin, was empowered. The intensification of labor, the layoffs, the wage cuts, the criminalisation of unionism (which was also enacted by articles of the bill against terrorism in 2010) are some of the pieces that complete the puzzle of employers’ legal terrorism.
While, , alienation rules among the classes of the repressed nowadays, unionism as a means of struggle has lost some of the characteristics of the dynamic collective struggles. Trade unions have become a means of personal financial gains and social upgrade through the employers’ unions or political party affiliates that are concerned with the reproduction of their delegation role and party interest.
However, even in this social situation there are examples of selfless struggle. One of the consistent fights of the past several years is the one against the abolition of the Sunday holiday and the liberalized working hours in the trade sector. Giannis A. is from the first moment, an integral part of this fight through his participation in worker’s collectives organized without hierarchies(as well as in the Worker’s trade union of Piraeus) as a worker and a striker that actively contributes in the resistance of workers against the unaccountability of the employers. He stands by his co-workers that are targeted by the employers, setting an example of collegiate-class solidarity. All of his choices mentioned above are truly hostile to the interests of the business group.
Since Leroy couldn’t find anything on him so that they could fire him, they tried to implicate him as an accomplice in my initiative to expropriate products, laying this claim on the fact that we talked to each other during my stay in the store which was recorded on camera. For any normal person, greeting a friend that works in a store is a usual thing. On the other hand, someone whose mentality is equivalent to a cop’s logic, this seems suspicious. It is the same logic that the police counter-terrorism unit applies on the trials of anarchists when they claim that “a normal life is a cover for someone’s criminal conduct...”
This is not an exaggeration or a misplaced interpretation on the part of the security guards but a conscious choice that targets Giannis A., something that also has many implications and receivers.
If this was a legitimate accusation, it would automatically give the opportunity to the company to fire him, getting rid of the internal “gangrene”, at the same time sending an intimidating message to anyone that struggles for his/her rights against bosses, a terrorizing message and depoliticisation to those who resist, turning them into common criminals. Giannis A. incrimination continued, as it was expected, from repression mechanisms as well. At first, he was called to testify as a witness in the case, but the next day with the upgrade of the charges, because of the political profile of the offenders, he was charged by public prosecutor Maria Aggeloudi with the felony of abetting the predatory theft.
My “sinful” past was the factor that played a catalyst role, in my opinion, to the development and the upgrading of the case. For the police-judicial complex, I constituted a problem for the “healthy” body of society and for that reason a group was immediately formed charged with locating and arresting me, a fact that follows from what the cops said. Someone would have to be naive to believe that for every theft complaint, the Greek police unleashes manhunts. The investigation in my house had a disciplinary character as well, since it was impossible to look for the stolen products as they were never taken from the store, they confiscated political texts, records from the assemblies of the political group I participate, an antique typewriter, digital storing units and a bulletproof vest which was a means of self-protection. The degree of the exaggeration in the attempt to upgrade my prosecution can be observed in the charge of weapon possession that was imposed to me for two uninstalled curtain rods .... that was presented as wooden rods!!
The investigating magistratein turn, showed a disproportional interest in the organizational structure of the political group I participate, about the views of anarchists on the use of violence, the relation of my collective with Revolutionary Struggle and other issues irrelevant to the attempted theft.
For the justification of my detention, it would be impossible for the investigating magistrate not to include my former conviction for participating in a revolutionary organization. A charge that I denied from the beginning and I continue to do so until today. A conviction based on logical leaps and ambiguities. In this conviction, whether I accept it or not, the judges regard the practical of the monopoly to violence by those in power questioning by those being repressed. Those in power recognize the attempt of those being repressed to destroy the system of exploitation that they themselves are a part of. A system that constan tries to armor itself with dedicated laws, dedicated services, dedicated courts and dedicated treatment for prisoners, making use of every available mean that the legal arsenal disposes. Therefore, Aggeloudi and anyone related to the judicial mechanism, does not need orders from above telling them how to handle a case, as she knows – being a cog in the repressing mechanism – who are their enemies and their friends and acts according to their interest.
All the above, give prominence to the political dimension of my prosecution. My targeting and the handling of the case in this manner, of course, do not imply a personal vendetta, even though they have an impact on my life, but an overall and a multi-level attempt to eliminate the anarchist-anti-authoritarian movement.
Part of this effort is the criminalisation of the relationships between comrades and friends, the criminalisation of solidarity and mutual aid that is a fundamental element of the way we act and relate to each other in the present, as well as, of our social program as anarchists. Thus, the choice of some comrades to arrive at the store to pay the required amount and their protest of the three hours’ hostage-taking we experienced, were entitled “gang behavior” and “harboring of criminals”. These comrades acted in a way each and every one of us that shares our worldview would act. This choice of ours, is the practical dispute of the “values” of individualization, of individuality, of the solitude that those in power enforce on the contemporary societies.
The repressive authorities with the assistance of the unofficial interrogation employee, Konstantinos Drivas, being unable to understand that not everyone acts in their centralized way of thinking and maintain soulless human relations, attempted to present the aforementioned course of events as parts of a cohesive plan on our behalf, which is not true. In fact, they attempted, through the cover note from the police to the prosecutor’s office, to apply different roles to this plan by describing that I tried to guide the rest during our exit from the store. Let me inform them that we build our relationships in a completely different manner than drill sergeants, cops and judges, and that we do not follow orders from our superiors simply because there are no superiors and inferiors, there is no hierarchical order. Therefore, if they are looking for edifiers, leaders, chiefs, sergeants, directors and presidents, they should look in the actual gangs and terrorist organizations that they are members in.
…and you with your wealth and your guards…
Our time is one of those historic periods consisting of the madness of becoming rich, the international immunity of the multinational capital, the emergence of antagonisms through military conflicts, the explosion of inequality, composing the insane universe of the modern human subject.
Throughout history, the aim of those in power has always been to appear as the only way out of these “natural” phenomena, by reversing with conjuring tricks social reality. Being in disguise bearing the mask of redemption, tricking those of goodwill, continue through the centuries to commit all their bleak crimes against humanity and the planet.
Thus, the capitalist brutality is portrayed as the free-market economy, the immunity of the capital as globalization, unemployment and the lay-offs as the flexibility of the labor market, crushing of the poor as fiscal consolidation, concentration camps for migrants as hospitality centers, police brutality as protecting the civilians, poverty as lack of socialization and so on.
The social responsible facade of the large multinational companies such as Leroy Merlin floats in this gutter of antonyms. It attempts to hide behind fancy advertisements and successful events the repeated predatory theft they commit against thousands of employees. Through the flexibility of working hours, dozens work accidents, cheap rental workforce from the slave-trading company MANPOWER, extension of the working hours without payment of overtime, attempt to enforce nine hours of work (instead of eight), lay-offs of employees suffering from health issues (case of an employee that suffered from MS), repealing of the Sunday holiday, targeting of trade union members etc, Leroy Merlin exposes the true dimension of the crime committed every day on the expense of those exploited by the voracious beast of capital. This is the “growth potential” and the “sound entrepreneurship” that ridiculous businessmen are called to implement by ridiculous politicians.
This condition of greedy enrichment by the few on the expense of the many, inevitably creates, sooner or later, the desire to question the sanctity of individual property. The obstacle that stands in the way of this contestation, is security, the twin sister of property. Emperors, queens, politicians and every personified authority, have always had at their disposal armies, guards and the police.
The last one and a half century, security has become a field of profitability claiming its place in the world of supply and demand. The first private security companies in the mid-19th century acted as mercenary armies against strikers. The first and most notorious for the atrocities it committed against the working class, company was the Pinkerton agency in the USA, an agency that made a blood bath out of every strike.
Today, the delirium of horror and fear that dominates the western world, creates the ideal environment for the economic expansion of such companies. It is no coincidence that last year out of 1000 European companies with the largest economic growth, seven of them were in the business of security. Fear, menace and crime are the driving force of their profitability.
In this favourable condition, dozens such companies have been established in Greece, in the last few years, and have been staffed by cops, drill sergeants, fascists and jarheads. OVIT inc. being one of them, which apart form the security of Leroy Merlin, it is, also involved in public procurements for guarding hospitals and public facilities, with the most prominent being the one for the port of Mirina Limnos, a port accessible to NATOs ships as well. The founder and director of the company, Konstantinos Drivas, has special training in the field of extracting, collecting, managing and utilizing official information and intelligence as well as has participated in a series of military seminars following the standards of NATO. This constitutes important knowledge which he tries to pass on to other idiots through seminars in private training institutes. He is, thus, specialized in menace, blackmail and physical violence, whenever needed, and he proved it to his employers in the afternoon of the 12th of July. Those that plunder the employees on a daily basis and for decades and those with the blood of the NATO committed massacres in their hands… blame us!
Leroy Merlin and OVIT Inc dare to talk about morality, theft, violence and “gangrene”! Now, if that is not a reversal of reality then what is?
As for their effort to deny their responsibility about the development of the case by blaming it to the state mechanisms, saying that they didn’t press charges, they did not ask the prosecution of my comrades or my detention, they should not labour in vain trying to hide. The manager and the financial director of Leroy Merlin as well as the OVIT security team bear full responsibility for the outcome of this case.
The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.
Although the above quotation was written over a century and a half ago, it still ironically describes how in a world where inequalities are imposed, there can be no justice. Thus, "justice" by acquiring a profound substance through its laws and its functions is an integral part of the mechanism of repression, discipline and punishment of the ruling complex of state, capital, patriarchy against both the internal enemy and the dangerous classes. The violent downturn of recent years through the burdensome taxation, the rising cost of living, the steep rise in unemployment, and the resilient and precarious forms of work have created an environment of deplorable social groups that are raising the capitalist building. So we are in a permanent state of debt-ridden hostage with the prospect of even being imprisoned for a few euro bills.
At the same time, there is a systematic and orchestrated effort by all pillars of those in power, to resemble the social imaginary that poverty is a condition that we are responsible for it (which has a dose of truth as long as we do not destroy those who oppress us, we are also responsible). So various policy bumps throw us the slacker of our bankruptcy once “we've eaten together the money” ,calling us jabbers and scum because we do not pay tickets on public transport, calling us inept and lazy when we struggle for basics against the bosses and calling us lucky when we work for 300 Euros. This is the daily life of capitalism that 80% of humanity cannot meet basic survival needs.
For this reason, it is compelled by the power to classify as dangerous and harmful to the healthy social majority whole social groups bearing "dangerous" class, political, gender, origin and other characteristics. The major good in this treaty is the public order, which appears to be a prerequisite for the proper functioning of the system and for the further looting of our lives. That's why in periods like what we are experiencing right now, there is an extreme shift of repression and punishment from practice to existence, with a typical example of people being incarcerated in prisons and concentration camps simply because they have no papers.
So it doesn't matter what you do, but who you are. Are you toxic-addicted and have small quantities of drugs? You will be imprisoned - Are you a ship-owner and carrying tons of drugs? You are free to go.
Are you unemployed and owe a few euros to the public? Imprisoned - You are the Aristidis Floros of a business group and you have dismissed 256 millions of euros? But of course you are free to go.
Are you an anarchist and you fight the system? Imprisoned -Are you a cop and killing a fifteen year old anarchists? Of course you will be released
Are you a woman and resist your rape? Imprisoned Are you a businessman -big procurer? Free to go ...
The counterexamples are uncountable.
The judicial system acts as the fountain of Siloam in order to wash away the crimes of the rich, the prominent and their subordinates. At the time the French frigate Hugues Mulliez, the son of a majority-owned family and running the business group which also includes the Leroy Merlin where he himself started his business career, killing two people and seriously injuring another one withhis speedboat in Porto Heli is free to go, while I am in prison because I tried to remove 180 euros worth of items from his department store.
Even though that my detention preceded by approximately one month to the tragic event of Porto Heli, the rational of the judges that imprisoned me explains in a raw manner the class characteristics of the judicial system, which claims that “given his inability to provide for his own livelihood, there is an intention to obtain illicit profits and an inclination to commit simple and aggravated robberies; this is an integral part of his personality”. In simple terms, my adverse financial state is directly connected with crime commitment and which constitute elements of my personality. They circumvent, of course, the fact that due to my prior conviction, my bank account is blocked (the payroll account is considered, by the counter-terrorism law, a money laundering account) making it impossible for me to work in any job that the payroll is deposited in a bank account, which acts as a means of financial exclusion (this is a measure enforced to all the comrades convicted for participating in revolutionary organizations).
In the above-mentioned passage, we witness the criminalization of poverty to its fullest. In this inhumane situation some attempt to expropriate a small portion of the wealth that they themselves produce and is violently seized by the dominant class. Petty thefts in department stores and super markets as well as otherself-reductionpractices (refusing to pay unjust taxation, to validate their tickets in the public means of transportation, to pay the tolls etc) are phenomena that have intensified due to their appropriation by large parts of society the last years of the crisis. This motion contents in practice the vital part of the relationships governed by commercialization which is the money but also the fundamental principle of property exploitation.
Such “criminal” and “illegal” acts of contestation have indelibly marked the global history of the repressed, from the mythical figure of Robin Hood till the social thieves and anarchist bank expropriators, from the Brazilian peasant land expropriators till the self-reductionmovements of the Italian autonomous movement. As a part of this tradition, the only theft I recognize as an anarchist, as a worker and as a social being, is the one being committed in the human-to-human exploitation, by those that get richer on our expense.
Dystopia, the dominant normality.
If we take a look at human history, we will observe a full repetition, a pattern that we meet again and again, wars, exploitation, slavery, hunger, torture, death. The ambition for power and money doesn’t leave any room for the harmonic co-existence of humans, both among us and among humans and nature. There come certain periods, though, that reality is more crude than in certain others. Such a period is the one we experience today both locally and internationally. The law and order doctrine is being employed (on different intensity levels) across the corners of the planet as it seems to be the means of survival and reproduction of the capitalist system after the last crisis.
The past decade it is imposed with unabated intensity here by all political administrators. The fiscal consolidation and growth came hand in hand with the counter-revolutionary strategy as the outbreak of the crisis coincided with the uprising that broke out in the country after the assassination of the anarchist A. Grigoropoulos in the December of 2008.
This strategy sets as a spearhead the multi-level attack of the entire state – parastatal/paramilitary/fringe mechanism against the anarchist-anti-authoritarian movement that has acquired significant momentum and social roots. New counter-terrorism laws, new police units, new propaganda scenarios came to reinforce the effort to eliminate and terrorize that is being made against anarchists as well as all of those that question the governing policies. In this context, many anarchists found themselves in prison, dozens of squats got evicted, dozens of home intrusions took place. The broadening of this context, found an entire village in Skouries being prosecuted by the counter-terrorism law, entire areas turned into police-control/state zones such as Keratea and Leukimmi. Even though in the period that SYRIZA was elected government, there was a significant retreat of the contestation movements, the anti-revolutionary strategy continued with unabated intensity (with dozen squat evictions), but this time with a socialist facade.
The return of the right-wing governance reinstates security and repression as a central political agenda. The first samples of this policy is the handling of the case for which I am being imprisoned and six others of my comrades are being prosecuted, with the exhaustion of the severity of the law and expansion of the indictment bill, the unprovoked attack of the cops in a manifestation in Koukaki, the abolition of the university asylum, the much-publicized seize of Exarchia that begun with the eviction of four squats in the area the past few days, the kidnapping and threatening of a comrade in the context of the above-mentioned operation and the targeting of the anarchist group Rouvikonas.
Poverty, repression, oppression, fear, despair will continue to form the normality that authority has imposed to us. However, it is not a matter of how they act but more of what we do, how we will manage to get rid of, once and for all, those notions mainly and on a second level from the people that hold us entrapped in the moving sand of the system of repression and exploitation. In front of us stands nothing, in front of us also stands everything.
Either we fatally expect our extinction, or we march individually and collectively towards a world of equality, common ownership, solidarity and freedom.
The choice is ours.
Christoforos Kortesis Koridallos prison, September2019
Ovit , leroy merlin, state mechanism, all bastards work alongside
On Monday 12/7/2019, at Leroy Merlin’s store in Rentis, Athens, 2 anarchist comrades made an attempt to expropriate goods worth 180 euros. That made the occasion for Leroy Merlin’s administration, in cooperation with the security firm Ovit, to set their scheming targeting:
the comrade working at that store Giannis A., who was targeted and accused as “an accomplice to pedatory theft” due to his active political-syndicalistic action
the 2 comrades Christoforos Kortesis and Thymios A. who were both prosecuted for the felony “pedatory theft”, as the first comrade is remanded in custody pending trial, because he took goods worth 180 euros
the 4 comrades who where there in solidarity to support financially the 2 comrades and complain about their captivity for 3 hours by the employes and the owner ,Konstanntinos Drivas, of the security firm Ovit.
All in all, Chistoforos Kortesis and Thymios E., are considered “suspects” and Leroy Merlin orders them to be led by the security firm Ovit to the “security room” in order to resolve the issue and ensure the payment of the requisite amount of money. As the matter seems to be resolved and the comrades agree to pay all the money and while they are calling close comrades to bring the requisite amount, the ex-military and co-owner of the security firm Ovit, Konstantinos Drivas starts threatening and blackmailing the comrades using psychological and physical violence. He asks them to name the comrade-working there G.A. as their “accomplice”, trying to lead to his “justified” dismissal or force him to quit his job. He has been targeted by his employers due to his active political-syndicalistic action in the trade sector and the social class struggle. The 2 comrades refuse to play the bosses games and Drivas threatens to involve the police, taking advantage of the fact that Christoforos Kortesis is on parole for a former conviction by a special court that accused him of participating in the organization “Revolutionary Struggle” and tries violently to hold them captive in the room. The 2 comrades, demand to be released, since the had returned the products. 3 hours later, with the presence of 4 comrades who came in solidarity, their absurd captivity is over.
The state’s vengefulness soon takes the place of the employers’ terror tactics. On the same day, the hellenic police forwards to the public prosecutor of Piraeus the case file, which concerns three accusations of misdemeanors: theft, illegal use of force and personal injuries. On 13/7, the comrade Christoforos Kortesis is arrested in the city center of Athens, by hooded cops who lead him in a police car where they beat him and then they take him in the police department of Piraeus. At the same time, a search is conducted at his house with the presence of an exceedingly large police force and a whole theatrical show of prosecutions and repression is set up around a few electrical tools, worth 180 euros!!This starts to reveal the cheapness of their low comedy, that remains nevertheless very dangerous, at the present juncture of general repression.
“In view of his economic weakness to obtain income for his livelihood, resulting purpose of illegal income and propensity to commit theft and robbery as a part of his personality”
investigating magistrate G. Pantelidis
“So it doesn't matter what you do, but who you are. Are you toxic-addicted and have small quantities of drugs? You will be imprisoned - Are you a ship-owner and carrying tons of drugs? You are free to go.Are you unemployed and owe a few euros to the public? Imprisoned - You are the Aristidis Floros of a business group and you have dismissed 256 millions of euros? But of course you are free to go. Are you an anarchist and you fight the system? Imprisoned -Are you a cop and killing a fifteen year old anarchists? Of course you will be released. Are you a woman and resist your rape? Imprisoned. Are you a businessman -big procurer? Free to go...The counterexamples are uncountable.”
anarchist Christoforos Kortesis
The states vengefullness obtains flesh and blood through laws and officers of the class justice. The public prosecutor M. Aggeloudi changes the original accusation of “theft” to the felony of “pedatory theft”, in order to accomplish the immediate detention under remand of Christoforos Kortesis, something that actually happens on 16/7. The justification o detention is based on the investigating magistrates’ Pantelidis judjement that Christoforos Kortesis political route and bad economical state make him a suspected of committing new crimes. This reveals the justice’s class face, a face of the justice that at the same time releases the french businessman Hugues Mulliez, a member of the Mulliez family, owners of Leroy Merlin around the world. The bail was set in the amount of 50.000 for the murder of 2 people and the heavy injury of a third one, after they were run over by a private yacht and abandoned, in Porto Heli. A proletarian’s theft of consumables, worth a few euros is considered enough to lead to his imprisonement, while the murder of two people by a large shareholder is considered something that can be easily bought off. And Christoforos Kortesis special treatment comes as a result not only of his class position, that becomes even worse since his bank account has been blocked-one of the many measures of economic elimination imposed to those charged with participation in armed organizations. Christoforos Kortesis prosecution has clearly a moral character, as he is punished exemplary for his long and consistent political and social action as an anarchist fighter.
At the same time, the public prosecutor M. Aggeloudi charges 5 more people. She uses the well-known and widely used in terrorism cases, method of “anonymous call” to indentify the anarchist comrade Pavlos H. for his participation in the events. The false testimony of Konstantinos Drivas is used as well to implicate the comrade-working at Leroy Merlin. He is accused of the felony “accomplice to pedatory theft”. The 3 comrades, Thymios A., Giannis A. and Pavlos H. presented themselves in front of the investigating magistrate Pantelidis, defended their political action, shed some light into the sketchy Leroy Merlin-Ovit setup, and held a barrier against the accusations that were made up by the judicial mechanism. Thymios A. received a restraining order to show up in a police department and the other 2 were released with no restraining orders.
Safety, safety, property
The justification of Christoforos detention reveals the effort made by the judicial mechanism to criminalize solidarity, friendship and comradeship as well as the solidarity actions between people by trying to present them as “organized gangs” and “criminal abetting networks”. Once more the state used certain cases as testing tubes, to expand the use of the counter terrorism law 187 and to “discover” criminal organizations (incitement, moral instigation, complicity). All that, in order to stand against its declared enemies and fight us with the well-known tales of counter terrorism. In those tales solidarity appears to be “abbeting criminals”, relations between comrades appear to be “gangs” resistance to torture appears to be “illegan use of violence” and attempted theft appears to be “pedatory theft”.
Security firms with a wide range of companies that trade the so called “safety commodity” are a private army of moles and minions of the world’s bosses. It’s clear how they answer to them. Their job is not only to keep their bosses properties and earnings safe but also snitch on those targeted by the bosses. These traits make them indispensable allies of the state and its repressive mechanism. That’s why Drivas (former captain of the hellenic army, trained in the field of retrieving and handling military information aligned with NATO standards) with his testimony was more than enough to support the public prosecutor’s scenario. The recent placing of the former director of the multinational company G4S P. Kontoleon as the head director of the greek National Intelligence Service, speaks for itself. Leroy Merlin, like every other boss pays a lot of money to ensure the protection of its earnings, as it has a thousand reasons to worry about their security. The expropriation of goods from supermarkets and department stores has always been and still remains a common social practice, so that every day needs are covered without paying the price. As anarchists we perceive expropriation as a wider political imperative, to abolish property and every exploitation relationship.
And in this fight, of life and death, we will not place the bosses’ earnings above our lives and our needs or above our freedom. The french multinational company Leroy Merlin is a part of the rich elite of this world and the list of their “best employers practice” is quite long: dozens of work accidents that happen every single day in their stores and that have an unimaginable physical and psychological impact on hundreds of employees, the lead role that they play in the abolition of Sunday holiday, the imposition of working 9 hours a day, the dismissal of an employee who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis, ing it as “reduced performance”, the cooperation with “slavery” companies like Man Power, the exploitation of dozens of hired workers in their stores.
Let’s speak their language then. We know that the bosses, the state and its police-propositional mechanisms have developed a stable, guarded and close structure in order to carry out their everyday violent pedatory theft at our expense, through taxes, labour and nature exploitation etc. and they have a very wide network of available perpetrators to do that. So, if they want to look for gangs, they should look in the mirror.
Against the Order- Development -Security doctrine of the eliteSolidarity will crush them
The targeting of the multiform anarchist movement, the attempt to criminalize the social and class struggles, the targeting and the attempt to eliminate the strugglers, the smash of every face of self-organized struggle, the terrorizing and disarmament of political movements are all located at the core of the order- development-security doctrine, that political staff of the greek state has served for many years during the systemical capital crisis. The state and the bosses are trying to create an environment, where every social struggle or any voice of doubt will not be able to exist. And they are using a variety of repressive methods to achieve this: the recent refugee housing squat evictions, the deportation and banishment of thousands of refugees and immigrants to the “hospitality” of their modern concentration camps, the abduction of the anarchist Dimitris H., the repression of demonstrations against the installation of wind energy parks in Karditsa and Agrafa, the terrorizing of local resistance struggles (the repression of a local demostration in Koukaki against Airbnb and the touristic gentrification), the criminalization of strike, the university and campus reforms, the prosecution of 20 political prisoners for their public expression of solidarity with struggles behind the bars.
The multiform self-organized social class struggles are our way to catch our breath. A breath of comradeship, resistance and solidarity. A breath of freedom against the suffocation that the state and bosses are imposing on us. We are here, all present in the front of social class war. We will leave no comrade alone in any prosecution, we will leave no struggler alone in front of the state, the bosses and their minions, in front of those who commit the biggest everyday robbery at our expense.
Against their repression, no challenge will be left unanswered We shall smash the state’s and bosses’ terror

In poche parole, Chr.
In galera. In galera. In galera. In galera. Se sei imprenditore e trafficante di donne? Libero. E gli esempi sono infiniti..."Chr. Kortesis
Aggeloudi coinvolge altre 5 persone nell'operazione.
Kortesis
Nessun perseguimento ai/lle compagni/e
