Announcement concerning the mafia-style assault against anarchist comrade Giannis Dimitrakis at the prison of Domokos
On the 24th of May, in the prison facility where he is being held at Domokos, Giannis Dimitrakis was brutally assaulted by a group of inmates who hit him multiple times on the head. As a result, he was admitted to the hospital of Lamia in critical condition. Days later, even though his life is no longer at risk, there are still serious dangers for his overall health and well-being. The strength and mental fortitude that characterize Giannis fill us with hope that he will emerge from this battle victorious.
What was the cause of the assault on Giannis? It was his denial to accept and submit to the brutish authoritative laws that the prison mafia enforces on the prisoners, in accordance with the penitentiary service. Giannis held an unwavering moral and political stance, as a militant anarchist and insurrectionary. He refused to bow down to those who beat and abuse the weaker inmates, in order to reaffirm their own prestige, according to their own sickening “code”. He refused to accept the dire balance of power that has lately formed in the prisons, as well as in the general picture of class struggle. In the end, Giannis was assaulted because he denied the prison itself as a state of being and he refused to submit to the State and its mechanisms.
This is who Giannis is. His whole life he has been defined by this refusal to submit, even when it seemed impossible not to. He has always resisted any authority, formal or informal, both in and out of jail. This is what lead him to the rooftops of the prison facility in Malandrinos, during the 2007 riot. This is what lead him to confront the fascist leader Periandros in 2009. For 25 years, Giannis has relentlessly participated in the social and class struggle. He was in the barricades of the 90s riots and he defended the expropriation of the National Bank in 2006. He has written dozens of political texts. He participated in the struggles against the memorandums of austerity, as well as in the struggle against the drug mafia in Exarchia, partaking in all kinds of revolutionary practices. During his life of struggle, Giannis has always been motivated by a strong sense of justice, stemming from his uniquely emotional heart.
The gang that attacked Giannis is of a known type. One of its protagonists is a typical form of the world of mobsters and drug dealers. In other words, an archetype of the world of Authority. He is part of a mafia circuit, that does not hesitate to kill even the three-year-old children of its enemies. A circuit that has been dealing in huge amounts of drugs and has been controlling illegal strip-clubs and brothels in Kalamata and other small towns, always in accordance with authorities. Behind bars, this circuit has its own function, assisting the authorities to control, maintain and run the prison in the direction deciced by the penitentiary services and the ministry. This position of course comes with relative compensation. In this context, the mafia circuit works with the authorities in the direction of smothering riot practices and establishing a culture of cannibalism, individualization, submission and collaboration.
In the faces of these insidious scumbags and their cowardly attack on Giannis we recognize the repressive planning that is in play, organized by the penitentiary authorities, by the Ministries of Justice and Civil Protection, by the Government, by the State. As Giannis himself has said time and time again: Wherever the batons and guns of guards and cops can't reach, the knives and guns of the mafia can. In that sense, these particular thugs are only the physical perpetrators of the assault on Giannis. The moral accessories are the Direction of the prison facility, the general secretary of anti-crime policy Sofia Nicolaou, the Minister of Justice Konstantinos Tsiaras and the Minister of Civil Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis.
The state is provocatively twisting and misrepresenting the assault on Giannis, which was nothing less than attempted murder. The fact that the state tries to cover up the case only reinforces our belief that it had its own role in the incident. In any case, the attempted murder of a political prisoner by mafiosos in jail is a major political incident. It should mobilize the entirety of the radical social movement. We need to act in two directions: On the one hand, to bring the event to light and raise awareness. On the other hand, to turn this case into another field of conflict, a part of the struggle against the rotten world of prisons and mafias, of State and Capital.
We, for our part, have only this to say to Giannis, looking at him in his green eyes. We are proud of his stance. As for the physical and moral accessories of the attack on our comrade, we can only say that, in the words of our Turkish comrades, we will hold them accountable.
