Η είδηση είναι από το www.anncol.com/index-english.htm Heavy blows for Colombian death squads In the space of one month, paramilitaries from the death squad umbrella organization AUC have suffered the loss of more than 150 lives in three separate battles. At least 60 of the deaths were in battles against a combined FARC and ELN force in the Sur de Bolivar department, 600 kilometres from the Colombian capital. 09.01.2003 (By Dick Emanuelsson/Liberaci?n, Bogot?) News from the latest combat - which took place on December 26th - was reported by Caracol television station, which managed to have a journalistic team on site during the battles. The main battle, which began three days earlier in the rural regions of the municipality of San Pablo, is the third heavy blow that the leftist Colombian guerrillas have struck against the "paras" - the right-wing paramilitary groups associated with the AUC (United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia). On the 18th of November, the ?paras? were attacked by the 56th Front of the FARC in Cupica, a municipality of Bahia Solano in the department of Choco. According to the townspeople 35 paramilitary soldiers were killed. On the 13th of December, about 500 guerrillas from the 18th and 58th Fronts of the FARC attacked a camp of approximately 100 paramilitaries in the rural zone of Tierradentro. Farmers spoke of 40-60 deaths, whilst a few of the ?paras? managed to escape with their lives. The other paramilitaries were annihilated by the guerrillas. Apart from these large-scale battles, such as the case of El Cerro Sur, where the guerrilla attacked a base camp of the paramilitaries, many paramilitary soldiers have died in various smaller scale exchanges in other parts of the country. Last month, the AUC have had to bury between 130 and 170 of their combatants. Guerilla Unity In Sur de Bolivar department, the FARC guerrilla, commanded by Pastor Alape, Commander of the Magdalena Medio Block of FARC-EP, are fighting together with the ELN guerrilla group. This is the zone where paramilitary forces, supported by cattle farmers, bosses of large gold mines and, according to farmers and the insurgents, the government itself, through the Armed Forces, had previously tried to prevent the ELN from establishing a ?Meeting Zone? during the peace process with the Andres Pastrana government. The paramilitaries have assassinated more than four thousand people in the area, and displaced thousands of farmers, all of whom fled in order to avoid being killed. However, the insurgents have recovered the territory bit by bit, demonstrating that when both organisations work together, they can cause heavy losses to their enemies and significant advances in their political aims. Formidable Speed of the Armed Forces What is noteworthy of the guerrilla attacks against the paramilitary forces is the formidable speed of the Armed Forces in arriving at the battleground. The so-called ?Ghost? plane appears within one or two hours, bombarding and machine gunning ?both factions? in order to ?retake control of the area?. But the question always asked by farmers after such an attack is, ?Why don’t they want to take control before the battle, when the area is under control of the paramilitaries?? By contrast, in relation to guerrilla attacks on police and army barracks in other municipalities, the reaction isn’t always so speedy. Even President Alvaro Uribe has criticised his armed forces for their slowness, demanding that they mustn’t delay 50 hours, as was the case last May when the FARC attacked a group of counter-guerrillas in a municipality in the department of Nari?o. On the 22nd of January, 2001 five paramilitary fortifications were attacked in Sur de Bolivar. Eleven paramilitaries were killed and an undetermined number were injured in the battles, which were also carried out by a joint FARC-ELN force. On that occasion, the weekly publication VOZ reported that the ID cards of the eleven dead paramilitaries demonstrated that the majority of them came from the police and armed forces. When this reporter was leaving from the area, he could see with his own eyes the paramilitary check-point in El Tigre, only ten minutes from the municipality of Yondo. In Yondo, he then had to go through two other check-points, this time belonging to the army and police. Because of battles in the Cerro Sur, where the guerrilla completely destroyed the base camp of the paramilitaries, the balance of power between the insurgents and ?paras? has changed substantially. AUC boss Carlos Casta?o will have to cancel or at least postpone his long-time dream of sleeping in the San Lucas mountain range, where the base camp of the Central Command of ELN is located.
